EATING OUT (WELL) IN ROGOZNICA AND SURROUNDS

In Croatia eating well is not difficult, especially if you taste in the local restaurants (the konoba) the Dalmatian specialities that combine very well the Balcanic taste (here somewhat blended with Venetian traditions) with the extraordinary taste of fresh fish caught in the rich and crystal clear Dalmatian waters. Dalmatia is likely to be one of the very best places in Europe for top-class fish dining.
The simplicity of recipes (eg grilled fish) makes the quality of the raw material (the fresh fish) the very key ingredient of Dalmatian cuisine, even if a number of chefs add very successfully their own fine talent. Many restaurants manage to prepare quite well also Italian pasta, pizza, etc.
Best dishes to taste.
As (rich) appetizer you want to try the dry Dalmatian ham (prsiut) and the Pag cheese, the traditional octopus salad (folpi) or the delicious marinated sardines.
As first course you do not want to miss the black risotto (squid) and the white risotto with prawns (scampi), tagliatelle with lobster or the delicious fish soup (brodeto). Mussels, clams (pedoci), shells and pasta with mussels are also usually outstanding.
As main course, John Dory fish (Sanpero), the scorpion fish (scarpina), the grilled prawns or the lobster (alla buzara slowly cooked with oil and garlic) and the calamari are often highly recommendable. Even the gilthead (orada) and the seabass (lubin) take a much better taste here than in the rest of Europe where usually they come from farms.
Fish gets often served accompanied by potatoes and chrads. For the non fish-lovers life can be a bit tough. However, lamb, traditional plate of all balcanic cuisines, is also here vey well cooked. Very tasty are also cevapcici, spicy meatballs of beef or pork.
Among desserts do not forget to try the palacinke very similar to "crepes".
Prices are certainly convenient if compared to Western European standards, however do expect to pay for quality, especially in the coastal resorts.
Croatian wines have many aficionados and historical traditions (Californian Zinfandel was exported from here in the early 1800s, try Plavac Mali a not distant cousin of Zinfandel). They also boast a few award winning bottles.
We would especially recommend though Zlatna Zlathina, a white wine from Krk island, whose low alcohol content (11º), flower-bouquet and slightly salty taste makes it the perfect companion for all fish plates. Among the red wines you may want to try Zlatan Plavac from the Hvar island or Babic from nearby Primosten hills.
Red wines tend to be here though too robust not to "slaughter" the delicate taste of fish, so you want to try them with meat courses. Local restaurant house-wines can be also somewhat pleasant.
Croatian beers are good.
To finish the dine try travarica, a herbal spirit or - if you find it eg in Primosten at Kamenar`s - the carob spirit, really enjoyable and not too strong. Quite amiable is also the prosecco that in Croatia is an agreeable late vintage wine (but can`t compare with French Sauternes or Italian Passito).

RECOMMEND RESTAURANTS

Within a ray of 50 meters to 50 kilometrs from the the house of Rogoznica you can find numerous good restaurants (some of which we recommend in the next pages). In high season make sure you book your table in advance.
Mid-hi prices
Rogoznica
Antonijo, said to be one of the very best Dalmatian restaurants, open year round, 200 metres from the house. Do not miss it.
San Marco, 50 metres from the house, excellent, a bit more down-to-earth but not much less remarkable (their green tagliatelle with lobster are unforgettable).
Atrium, closet to the Marina Frapa, we did not try it, but heard good comments.
Primosten (6 km)
Kamenar, very good, just entered old Primosten from the main villane door.
Trogir (25 km)
Excellent is Kamerlengo (Vukovarska 2, in the old town).
Very good also Barba 1 km before Trogir driving from Rogoznica (specialized in mussels and shells) and Celica (floating restaurant just passed the bridge to Ciovo, on the right).
Brodarica (25 km, just before Sibenik)
Zlatna Ribica. "Chic" atmosphere. Hi quality and pricey cuisine.
Split (50 km)
The best value-for-money restaurant is unmistakeably Varos in the downtown.
The restaurant on the ACI Marina has a terrific view and overall good quality.
We found a bit disappointing the famous Sumica.
Mid-low prices
Rogoznica
Fortuna. Excellent risottos and fish, also good pizzas.
Fiesta. Good salads, quality pizza and spaghetti under a lovely pergola.
Vikend. On the road towards Marina-Trogir, 5 km out of Rogoznica. Excellent also for the meat fish plates (eg lamb).
Primosten
Dalmacija. Quite good and less expensive fish restaurant. Within the old town of Primosten.
Saricevi Dvori. In Primosten Burni, just on the hills above Primosten (10 km from Rogoznica), highly recommendable for price-quality.
Gostionica Boraja
Boraja. 10 km from Sibenik (40 from Rogoznica) on the interior road from Sibenik to Split. Very good for grilled meat.
Split
Galija. Pizza, spaghetti, all good quality.
Sarajevo. Balcanic specialties (meat) but also fish.
